74. Why do players make so many mistakes?
Because there are many more ways to go wrong in chess than in any other game.
In a typical position, only about 10 percent of the legal moves are good moves. Most of the others are mediocre.
But at least 10 percent are downright bad. In other words, there are as many bad moves as good ones.
As Savielly Tartakower put it, “The mistakes are there, waiting to be made.”
