Before Bobby Fischer battled it out against Soviet grandmaster Boris Spassky in the 1972 World Chess Championship in Iceland, chess wasn’t especially popular with people anywhere at all. When the Fischer–Spassky match took place, chess just skyrocketed — mainly because of Fischer’s fame and antics.
