Jennifer Shahade was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She learned to play chess from her father, FIDE Master Michael Shahade, and brother, International Master Gregory Shahade. She is a two-time US Women's Champion and has represented America in three Olympiads. In 2005 Shahade published her first book, Chess Bitch: Women in the Ultimate Intellectual Sport. In 2007 Shahade co-founded a non-profit chess charity called 9 Queens, dedicated to extending the benefits of chess to those most in need of its benefits, especially girls and at-risk youth.
